Concepcion’s experience in the changing neighborhood of Southside has generally been a pleasant and welcomed on; she only brought up a few losses that she has encountered or missed during her interview. However, it must be understood that she and her family are among one of the few lucky longtime residents who have been able to stay. One of the leading factors that result in the displacement of people is increased real estate prices. As an area becomes more gentrified, with high-end amenities, stores, and a desirable zip code, prices of homes and apartments rise. Residents may be forced to leave for a variety of reasons including eviction, public action, or inflated prices. People who can no longer afford their homes are forced to uproot their lives and move elsewhere. Luckily, this has not been Concepcion’s experience.

Concepcion remembers her father having “this vision that you have to have a house… he saw the future... I think that he saw that... it was better to have someplace to live that belongs to you and he was so right”.  Her father, therefore, when given the opportunity, invested in multiple properties in the Southside; one of which is still in the family. Although this is not the house that she and her husbandcurrently live in, they too have a rather fortunate arrangement. She and her husband live in a building owned by the church because he runs the Southside Mission.  She cites this as the main reason they have been able to remain in the neighborhood. When asked if she was at all concerned about what will happen if she has to move out of the house, she said “I don’t know what I am going to do but I don’t want to leave the community.” She has recently been in touch with Los Sures about applying for senior housing. In total, Los Sures has redeveloped 4,000 low income housing units. As a Section-8 assisted living units, the rent paid for these apartments is based on income. According to a financial advising website that analyzes properties, Los Sures Senior Housing units are 31% less expensive than market price rentals in the same neighborhood. [1].

Because of her and her husband’s good jobs, Concepcion is concerned that they may not be eligible for affordable housing “because we have always been in… a level where we are not high class, not low class, the middle class doesn’t exist. So there is nothing for middle class. You don’t qualify for anything because you are not upper class, so its hard. So I am hoping that middle class will soon fit somewhere.”
